Welcome back to another episode of Quantum Growth for Financial Advisors!
In this solo “quick hit” episode, Jon Kuttin continues the conversation around one of the most important concepts for driving meaningful growth: Signal vs. Noise.
Building on the previous episode’s discussion of the Reticular Activating System (RAS), Jon explores what happens when leaders begin to consistently identify and focus on the signal in their own businesses. The goal is to spend roughly 80% of your time working on the signal and 20% or less on the noise, creating the clarity and focus needed to drive bigger outcomes, including 10x growth and VHAGs.
Jon shares how this shift is beginning to take place within his own wealth management firm, KWM, as well as other organizations and coaching groups he works with. As leaders become more intentional about tracking their time and activating their RAS, they begin to recognize not only their own distractions but also when the people they lead are still operating in the noise.
That realization leads to the episode’s central leadership lesson: mastering signal vs. noise personally is only the beginning. The greater challenge is changing the culture of an organization so that other people can recognize the signal and execute on it themselves. Jon defines leadership as the ability to influence someone to do something they would not do without you—and argues that meaningful organizational growth ultimately depends on changing the behaviors of the people within the organization.
Jon also introduces the idea of “square rooters”—the key people within an organization who are already focused on the signal or are on their way to becoming signal-focused leaders. Using a 25-person organization as an example, he explains that the square root of 25 is 5, suggesting that a rapidly growing organization might have four additional people, beyond the leader, who are capable of focusing on the signal rather than the noise.
Finally, Jon turns the responsibility back toward leadership. If your team doesn’t seem to “get it,” his challenge is to look in the mirror first. Leaders need to communicate the signal repeatedly, educate their teams, and build systems that help key people understand and execute on what matters most. The ultimate goal is to make developing others into signal-focused leaders part of your own signal.
Whether you’re leading a wealth management firm, building a high-growth organization, or trying to move your team from complexity to clarity, this episode offers an important reminder: first, you have to master the signal yourself—then you have to integrate it throughout your organization.
